The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (NSWCCD) intends to award a contract to provide one deuterium-deuterium (D-D) neutron generator and one deuterium-tritium (D-T) neutron generator.
Technical programs at NSWCCD and within the Navy require the capability to evaluate fast neutron spectrometers, RADIACs, dosimeters, and imaging systems in basic and applied research programs as well as for the testing and evaluation of radiation detection systems.
In the past these types of detection systems, either at the advanced or preliminary stage of development, have been exposed to a variety of radiation sources that emit fast neutrons in the energy ranges of interest. Having reliable fast neutron generators for use in the laboratory and in the field would greatly enhance the effectiveness of these efforts and obviate the need for expensive and sometimes ineffective fast-neutron emitting radioactive sources.
Fast neutron generators have the advantage that they can be turned off so that there is no neutron emission when high voltage power is turned OFF. This feature is of great value both in terms of experimental capabilities as well as in regard to personnel safety, issues of storage and reducing risk of accidental radiation exposures.
