Recovery and Management of Disused Radioactive Sources

Los Alamos National Security, LLC (LANS), a prime contractor to the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), is seeking vendors with the necessary qualifications, facilities, and demonstrated experience in handling, shipping, and storing radioactive sealed sources, and disassembling devices containing radioactive sealed sources.

LANS’ Off-Site Source Recovery Project (OSRP) in the International Threat Reduction Group, Nuclear Engineering and Nonproliferation Division is directed by the Office of Global Material Security (GMS) within the United States Department of Energy (DOE), National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to recover and manage disused radioactive sealed sources.

This scope requires shipping radioactive sealed sources to subcontracted off-site facilities so they can be removed from their shipping containers, removed from devices if necessary, and consolidated into packages for interim storage or final disposition.

This requires the receipt and shipment of Type A and B quantities of radioactive sealed sources, the ability to provide interim storage for hundreds of Curies (Ci) of sealed sources containing transuranic isotopes and thousands of Ci of sealed sources containing beta-gamma emitting isotopes. This work requires the vendor’s ability to disassemble devices containing beta/gamma emitting sealed sources with activities of several thousand Ci.
