Biography

U.S. Strategic Command, established in 1992 as a successor to Strategic Air Command (SAC), is one of nine unified commands in the Department of Defense and is the leader, steward and advocate of the U.S. strategic capabilities.

USSTRATCOM has responsibility for space operations; global strike; global missile defense; global command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR); and combating weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

Day-to-day planning and execution for U.S. Strategic Command’s mission areas is done by a sub-unified command and the following USSTRATCOM functional components:
