U.S. Strategic Command, established in 1992 as a successor to Strategic Air Command (SAC), is one of nine unified commands in the Department of Defense and is the leader, steward and advocate of the U.S. strategic capabilities.
USSTRATCOM has responsibility for space operations; global strike; global missile defense; global command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR); and combating weapons of mass destruction (WMD).
Day-to-day planning and execution for U.S. Strategic Command’s mission areas is done by a sub-unified command and the following USSTRATCOM functional components:
- U.S. Cyber Command
- USSTRATCOM Center for Combating Weapons of Mass Destruction (SCC-WMD)
- Standing Joint Force Headquarters for Elimination (SJFHQ-E)
- Joint Functional Component Command for Global Strike (JFCC-GS)
- Joint Functional Component Command for Space (JFCC Space)
- Joint Functional Component Command for Integrated Missile Defense (JFCC-IMD)
- Joint Functional Component Command for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (JFCC-ISR)
- Joint Warfare Analysis Center (JWAC)
