The National Exposure Research Laboratory (NERL) is one of three national laboratories that conduct research for U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Research and Development.

NERL focuses on research that leads to improved methods, measurements, and models to assess and predict exposures of humans and ecosystems to harmful pollutants and other conditions in air, water, soil, and food. Environmental stressors can include chemical pollutants, microbes and pathogens, physical agents such as land use, and processes such as alteration of wildlife habitat.

The organization supports regulatory programs through the development of methods for waste site characterization, computer modeling of pollutant transport and fate, monitoring network design, environmental indicator assessments, and design of exposure assessment studies.

Technology areas of expertise include: biosensors, surface water testing, chemical modeling, exposure and dose research, genomic and immuno-based method development, microbiological and chemical assessments, molecular indicators, pesticide exposure assessments and pathogen identification.
