SUMMARY:Chemical Sciences Roundtable: AI and Scalability
DESCRIPTION:The second installment of the Chemical Sciences Roundtable 2024 webinar series on AI topics in the fields of chemistry and chemical engineering will be held on 3 October 2024 via webcast. \nMelanie Mesropian (AIChE) will moderate an interactive conversation between Leo Chiang (Dow Chemical) and Greg Mulholland (Citrine) about what it means to use AI tools sustainably with possible examples ranging from R&D efforts to product manufacturing. \nThis discussion of AI + Scalability seeks to explore at scale efforts across the chemistry and chemical engineering enterprise that successfully employ AI to support the sustainable growth and development of the chemical industry\, which emerges from the lab. \nAI tools have already been shown to improve processes for chemical engineering but the potential in the digital revolution for the chemical industry is still unfolding. Discussions will include what obtaining these outcomes will require\, such as leveraging the existing and potential capabilities of AI\, applying them to meet new challenges that arise\, and evolving the existing methods\, processes\, systems\, tools\, and labor force in the space. \nPlease visit the National Academies’ AI + Scalability event website for more information.

SUMMARY:Strengthening the Protection of Civilians from the Humanitarian Consequences Arising from the Use of Explosive Weapons in Populated Areas
DESCRIPTION:The use of explosive weapons in populated areas (EWIPA) is a major cause of civilian harm in armed conflicts worldwide. In addition to their devastating direct effects\, the impacts of the use of explosive weapons reverberate for a long time after a conflict has ended\, causing severe and long-lasting harm to people and communities. \nThe Political Declaration on Strengthening the Protection of Civilians from the Humanitarian Consequences Arising from the Use of Explosive Weapons in Populated Areas (EWIPA Political Declaration)\, endorsed by over 80 States\, provides a crucial framework for action and collaboration in preventing and mitigating these harms and strengthening the protection of civilians in armed conflict. \nAhead of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) First Committee in October 2024\, UNIDIR and the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) has organizd a series of online regional briefings to raise awareness of the EWIPA Political Declaration and promote exchanges of regional experiences and approaches. \nThe briefings aim to help inform discussions among Member States in relevant regional and international meetings. Furthermore\, the briefings will contribute to preparations towards the second international follow-up Conference of the Declaration\, to be held in San José\, Costa Rica\, in 2025. \nWhen and Where\nTimes and days vary for different regional groups\, please see below to identify your regional group. \n\n\n\n\nAfrican States\n1 October 2024\, 10:00-11:00 CEST\nRegister here\n\n\nLatin American and Caribbean States\n1 October 2024\, 16:00-17:00 CEST\nRegister here\n\n\nAsia-Pacific States\n2 October 2024\, 10:00-11:00 CEST\nRegister here\n\n\nEastern European States\n2 October 2024\, 14:00-15:00 CEST\nRegister here\n\n\nWestern European and other States\n3 October 2024\, 14:00-15:00 CEST\nRegister here\n\n\nCheck your local time zone here\nPlease register for each regional briefing. This four-day training course is scheduled to be held in-person in Dakar from March 4-7\, 2024. \nFacilitated by experts from Sandia National Laboratories\, this training will address best practices and tools for identifying chemicals of security concern and assessing likely routes used for bulk chemical transport in order to secure those chemicals against potential threats from terrorists and other non-state actors throughout the risk evaluation process. \nWMDT welcomes your nomination of up to 20 mid-level law enforcement officials and chemical security experts with responsibility or authority to plan for\, or provide security to\, hazmat transportation\, including chemicals of security concern that are transported via highway routes throughout Senegal. Participants should serve in roles involving security and threat assessments of chemical transportation or providing tactical security to hazardous chemical transports via overland routes. In addition to participants with these specific responsibilities\, experience\, and expertise\, WMDT also seeks to achieve a gender balance among participants and encourages the Government of Senegal to nominate both male and female candidates to participate. \nWMDT will announce additional logistics and venue information in Dakar once the participant list is finalized. Please visit Sandia’s Global Chemical and Biological Security Events page for more information.

SUMMARY:Introduction to the Role of Artificial Intelligence in Strengthening the Security of Nuclear Facilities
DESCRIPTION:The Introduction to the Role of Artificial Intelligence in Strengthening the Security of Nuclear Facilities workshop on 6-8 Feb 2024 will review the latest information on the various applications of AI in nuclear security and specifically physical protection in the context of nuclear facilities. \nThis workshop will explore how AI can play a significant role in improving physical protection by enhancing threat detection\, monitoring\, and response capabilities. In particular\, the workshop will explore the following areas: \n\nVideo Surveillance and Monitoring (Facial Recognition\, Object Detection\, Behavioural Analysis)\nIntrusion Detection (Data Integration\, Anomaly Detection\, Pattern Recognition)\nPredictive Maintenance (Sensor Monitoring\, Data Analysis)\nResponse (Automated Alerts\, Scenario Prediction\, Real-time Engagement Awareness)\nOpen Source Intelligence (Information gathering; Threat assessment)\nEducation (Personalised training; Tailored exercises)\n\nIt clearly appears that AI holds immense potential to drive innovation\, improve decision-making processes and solve complex problems across various fields\, and eventually positively impacting society. How does it apply to the nuclear industry and in particular to the security of the nuclear materials\, processes and facilities all along the fuel cycle? What are the expected nuclear security benefits? What could be the risks? What is the right level of the human-in-the loop when assessing security incidents. \nNuclear operators and other nuclear security stakeholders are already investing significant resources to address ever evolving threats and to continuously look for new approaches and advanced technologies that will help ensure they remain one step ahead of their adversaries. What attitude should nuclear operators adopt towards AI? How can they develop their understanding of the topic? How can they design and implement a process for integrating AI capabilities into their nuclear security programme equipment and security solutions? What are the prerequisites to the successful implement such technology? What could be challenges\, including legal and ethical matters? \nThe workshop will offer the opportunity for the participants to benefit from the experience of practitioners who are already using AI to enhance the performance of their security arrangements. \nParticipation is limited to space available. \nPlease visit the World Institute for Nuclear Security’s Introduction to the Role of Artificial Intelligence in Strengthening the Security of Nuclear Facilities page for more information.
