SUMMARY:DARPA GRIT Program Proposer's Day
DESCRIPTION:The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Defense Sciences Office (DSO) is sponsoring a Proposers Day webcast to provide information to potential proposers on the objectives of an anticipated Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) for the Gamma Ray Inspection Technology (GRIT) program. \nThe Proposers Day will be held via webcast on July 8\, 2019 beginning at 2:00 PM and slides will be posted July 9\, 2019 by 4:00 PM. Advance registration is required for viewing the webcast. \nThe program objective is to develop prototype systems capable of producing intense\, tunable\, and narrow bandwidth gamma rays using novel techniques and emerging component technologies that can achieve transportable form factors supporting DoD and interagency partner mission needs. \nSuch a technology provides the ability to non-destructively characterize objects for not only their elemental content\, but also for their nuclear composition. Applications include special nuclear materials detection\, elemental imaging\, narcotics and explosives detection\, non-destructive inspection of additive manufactured components\, new diagnostics and treatments in medicine and provision of a new tool to better understand detailed nuclear structures. \nViewing the GRIT Proposers Day webcast is voluntary and is not required to propose to the anticipated GRIT BAA. \nRegistration closes: July 1\, 2019 at 5:00 PM Eastern or when capacity is reached\, whichever comes first.

SUMMARY:WMD Spotlight Seminar: Predicting Emerging Threats: Beyond 2+3
DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Study of WMD will host a Spotlight Seminar on 9 May 2019 featuring guest speaker Jay Tilden\, Associate Administrator and Deputy Under Secretary for Counterterrorism and Counterproliferation\, NNSA\, DOE. \nTilden will discuss the difficulties in predicting major emerging threats and provide an overview of the current 2+3 strategy and associated national security framework\, with an emphasis on nuclear deterrence and the current non-proliferation and arms control structure as the cornerstone of today’s world and will discuss NNSA’s role in sustaining nuclear deterrence. \nFinally\, Tilden will describe what a revolution in either political or military affairs may look like that could up-end the current structure. \nSince April 2016\, Jay Tilden has served as NNSA’s Deputy Under Secretary for Counterterrorism and Counterproliferation with responsibility in preparing for\, responding to\, and successfully resolving nuclear and radiological accidents and incidents worldwide. \nThe mission includes providing technically informed policy and operational recommendations required to advance U.S. nuclear counterterrorism and counterproliferation objectives\, while informing US government agencies on nuclear threat devices (i.e.\, improvised nuclear devices\, proliferant devices\, and lost or stolen nuclear devices outside of state control). The office applies the Department of Energy’s (DOE) and NNSA’s existing nuclear expertise\, science\, technology and engineering capabilities to support relevant whole-of-government activities\, while sustaining deployable assets for both nuclear incident response and nuclear forensics activities. Previously\, Tilden served as the deputy associate administrator of the same office.

SUMMARY:ChemBio Terrorism Defense: Detection\, Countermeasures and Prevention of Chemical and Biological Threats
DESCRIPTION:We live in a shrinking world. Biological and chemical threats that were once thought to be exotic or outdated have become domestic and rejuvenated. However\, despite this recognition we are still largely without effective tools to detect\, intervene and/or prevent against intentional release of biological and chemical weapons. \nThis conference will focus on the application of cutting edge research that is now being applied to develop these new tools. We will bridge in-lab research and model development with real world application of these findings. \nMajor topic areas will include: \n\nNovel imaging techniques that follow host response to chemical and biological insults\nNovel approaches to countering antimicrobial resistance\nNew detection technologies\nUnderstanding the problems and advances in agriculture bioterrorism\n\nTo enhance the experience and foster professional development of trainees in this field\, the 2019 conference will be proceeded by the Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) on Chemical and Biological Terrorism. The GRS is planned by and is for post- and pre-doctoral trainees. The GRS provides an excellent forum for trainees to present and interact in a collegial environment.

SUMMARY:Emergency Triage\, Treat and Transport (ET3) Model Webinar
DESCRIPTION:A webinar will be hosted by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation’s (Innovation Center) Emergency Triage\, Treat\, and Transport (ET3) Model team on 27 Feb 2019. \nET3 is a voluntary\, five-year payment model that will provide greater flexibility to ambulance care teams to address emergency health care needs of Medicare beneficiaries following a 911 call. Under the ET3 model\, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will pay participating ambulance suppliers and providers: \n\nTransport an individual to a hospital emergency department (ED) or other destination covered under the regulations\nTransport to an alternative destination (such as a primary care doctor’s office or an urgent care clinic)\nProvide treatment in place with a qualified health care practitioner\, either on the scene or connected using telehealth\n\nAs a result\, the ET3 model aims to improve quality and lower costs by reducing avoidable transports to the ED and unnecessary hospitalizations following those transports. \nCurrently\, Medicare regulations only allow payment for emergency ground ambulance services when individuals are transported to hospitals\, critical access hospitals\, skilled nursing facilities\, and dialysis centers. Most beneficiaries who call 911 with a medical emergency are therefore transported to one of these facilities\, and most often to a hospital ED\, even when a lower-acuity destination may more appropriately meet an individual’s needs. \nThe webinar will include a timeline for release of the Request for Applications and the Notice of Funding Opportunity. \nEMS providers\, beneficiaries and other interested parties are invited to attend the webinar.
