SUMMARY:Merits and Viability of Different Nuclear Fuel Cycles and Technology Options and the Waste Aspects of Advanced Nuclear
DESCRIPTION:A committee of the National Academies will hold a virtual meeting December 7-8\, 2020 on the “Merits and Viability of Different Nuclear Fuel Cycles and Technology Options and the Waste Aspects of Advanced Nuclear”. \nThis study responds to a congressional mandate in the FY2020 Appropriations Act’s Conference Report in the subsection titled “Used Nuclear Fuel Disposition R&D\,” which calls for the Academies to “evaluate the merits and viability of different nuclear fuel cycles and technology options\, including both existing and future technologies” and will examine “the waste aspects of advanced reactors.” The study will result in two reports produced by a committee of experts convened by the Academies. The reports will contain consensus findings and recommendations to advise the Department of Energy\, Congress\, and other relevant stakeholders. \nBackground\nThe National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine will appoint an ad hoc committee of experts to evaluate and assess: (1) the merits and viability of different nuclear fuel cycles and technology options and (2) the waste aspects of advanced nuclear reactors (that could be commercially deployed within the next 30 years). A consensus report will be produced to respond to each topic. \nThe first report will: \n\nEvaluate the merits and viability of different nuclear fuel cycles and technology options\, including both existing and future technologies and particularly consider the relevant work performed by the fuel cycle program of the Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE)\, but not exclusively consider this program.\nAccount for linkages among all elements of the fuel cycle (including waste transportation\, storage\, and disposal associated with the front-end as well as back-end of the fuel cycle) and for broader safety\, security\, and nonproliferation concerns.\n\nThe second report will: \n\nAccount for typical volumes and characteristics of waste streams from various proposed advanced nuclear reactor technologies\, including radioisotopes of concern\, radioactivity level\, and thermal load and include the designs under consideration by the Generation IV International Forum and by the Department of Energy\, and including non-fuel radioactive wastes\, for example\, graphite blocks that are used in high-temperature gas-cooled reactors.\nEvaluate disposal and storage requirements for these wastes.\nAssess the impact of possible reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel on waste generation.\nExamine the economics of the possible waste disposal systems that could be required for advanced reactors.\n\nThe two consensus reports will provide findings and recommendations that may consider evidence-based policy options.

SUMMARY:Workshop on Federal Human Health PFAS Research
DESCRIPTION:The National Academies will host a 2-day virtual workshop 26-27 October 2020 to address the state of the science and ongoing federal research regarding human exposure to Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)\, experimental toxicology studies to identify human risks from PFAS\, and human health outcomes from PFAS exposures. \nPFAS are diverse fluorinated organic compounds used to make products that resist heat\, stains\, oil\, and water. They are used in firefighting foams; a wide variety of consumer products\, such as packaging\, carpeting\, and cookware; and in industries such as aerospace\, automotive\, and electronics. Their manufacture and use have led to widespread distribution and occurrence in the environment. PFAS can be highly mobile and persistent in the environment\, and depending on chemical structure\, PFAS can accumulate at different levels in human\, animal\, and plant tissue. \nThe National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine will be conducting a workshop to review federal government human health research on PFAS and to identify research and data gaps. \nThis event is free to attend via webcast. SUMMARY:Radioactive Sources: Applications and Alternative Technologies
DESCRIPTION:The Nuclear and Radiation Studies Board of the National Academies invites you to join a virtual committee meeting on October 13\, 2020 for its ongoing study on Radioactive Sources: Applications and Alternative Technologies. \nThe meeting will feature presentations by Nordion\, Sotera Health\, and QSA Global\, Inc.\, companies that produce radioactive sources and alternative technologies. \nThe purpose of this Sandia National Laboratories’ sponsored study is to support existing and future activities under the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Office of Radiological Security (ORS) program to reduce the use of high-risk radiological materials in commercial applications. The study will update the 2008 National Academies consensus study on “Radiation Source: Use and Replacement” by reviewing the current state of high-risk radionuclide applications by sector (e.g.\, industrial\, research\, medical\, and other commercial applications) and by reviewing the current state of existing technologies on the market that are or could be used to replace radioisotopic technologies in those applications. \nThe assessment will examine domestic and international developments in radioactive source applications and feasible alternative technologies. In addition\, the assessment will use criteria to assess the overall technical feasibility and maturity of those technologies\, including the Department of Energy Technology Readiness Level (TRL). Moreover\, the assessment of alternative technologies will evaluate their attractiveness and practicality to organizations in consideration of adopting or transitioning to them. \nLearn more on the study webpage.

SUMMARY:Agnostic Compact Demilitarization of Chemical Agents (ACDC)
DESCRIPTION:The Homeland Defense & Security Information Analysis Center (HDIAC) will host a webinar presentation on ‘Agnostic Compact Demilitarization of Chemical Agents (ACDC)‘ on 1 October 2020. \nThe safe destruction of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) and organic precursors is a timely\, costly\, and significant challenge for the international community. Today\, for example\, there are no approaches that exploit chemistries that are truly agnostic in terms of the agents that can be processed. Additionally\, current approaches require transport of agents from the storage site to a neutralization site\, which can add significant cost and time to the destruction process. \nDARPA’s ACDC program explored new technologies for neutralization of bulk stores of CWAs and organic precursors at or near the site of storage. ACDC developed and demonstrated the technologies needed to construct a transportable\, prototype system that converts organic compounds into constitutive carbon/nitrogen/phosphorous/sulfur oxides and stable alkali or alkaline earth metal salts. The ACDC system featured chemistries for agent destruction and sequestration of halogens and other components using locally available or easily transportable resources. This webinar describes the DARPA ACDC program and its exploration of neutralization of bulk stores of CWAs and organic precursors at or near the site of storage. \nPlease register in advance for the webinar at: https://www.anymeeting.com/PIID=EF54DD81854C3B \nAlternative Live Streams: \n https://r.hdiac.org/facebook\n https://r.hdiac.org/youtube

SUMMARY:Emergency Triage\, Treat and Transport (ET3) Model Webinar
DESCRIPTION:A webinar will be hosted by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation’s (Innovation Center) Emergency Triage\, Treat\, and Transport (ET3) Model team on 27 Feb 2019. \nET3 is a voluntary\, five-year payment model that will provide greater flexibility to ambulance care teams to address emergency health care needs of Medicare beneficiaries following a 911 call. Under the ET3 model\, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will pay participating ambulance suppliers and providers: \n\nTransport an individual to a hospital emergency department (ED) or other destination covered under the regulations\nTransport to an alternative destination (such as a primary care doctor’s office or an urgent care clinic)\nProvide treatment in place with a qualified health care practitioner\, either on the scene or connected using telehealth\n\nAs a result\, the ET3 model aims to improve quality and lower costs by reducing avoidable transports to the ED and unnecessary hospitalizations following those transports. \nCurrently\, Medicare regulations only allow payment for emergency ground ambulance services when individuals are transported to hospitals\, critical access hospitals\, skilled nursing facilities\, and dialysis centers. Most beneficiaries who call 911 with a medical emergency are therefore transported to one of these facilities\, and most often to a hospital ED\, even when a lower-acuity destination may more appropriately meet an individual’s needs. \nThe webinar will include a timeline for release of the Request for Applications and the Notice of Funding Opportunity. \nEMS providers\, beneficiaries and other interested parties are invited to attend the webinar.
