SUMMARY:Webinar: Long Term Effects of Acute Exposure to Sarin Nerve Agent
DESCRIPTION:The National Toxicology Program (NTP)\, on behalf of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Countermeasures Against Chemical Threats (CounterACT) program\, conducted a systematic review to evaluate the evidence for long-term neurological effects in humans and animals following acute exposure to sarin. \nThis Peer-Review Meeting will be a full day of discussion on the findings in the draft report and the path forward. \nRegistration is required for webinar attendance and to present oral comments. The webcast is open to the public. \nRead more about the report at our partner publication Global Biodefense: Long-Term Effects Following Acute Exposure to Sarin Nerve Agent

SUMMARY:2019 NIJ Forensic Science R&D Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The Forensic Technology Center of Excellence (FTCoE) will assist the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) in hosting the annual NIJ Forensic Science Research and Development (R&D) Symposium on February 19th\, 2019 at the 71st Annual American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) meeting in Baltimore\, MD. \nThe NIJ Forensic Science R&D Symposium is an open meeting where attendees can learn about NIJ-funded research across a variety of forensic science areas. AAFS meeting registration is not necessary. Feel free to stop by and listen to specific presentations\, or stay all day and learn about the diverse NIJ forensic science R&D portfolio. \nThe R&D Symposium will take place at the Hilton Baltimore Inner Harbor Hotel\, Key Ballroom 9-12. \nThe future of forensic sciences and its impact on the public and criminal justice community is a motivating topic to gather expertise in a forum to discuss\, discover\, and share new research approaches and applications to promote the advancement of forensic sciences. The R&D Symposium was specifically designed to bring together practitioners and researchers to enhance information-sharing with the goal of moving research from theory to practice. \nHighlighted presentation topics include: \n\nQuantitative Assessment of Shoeprint Accidental Patterns with Implications Regarding Similarity\, Frequency\, and Chance Association of Features\nFinding the Region of Origin of Bloodspatters in Complex Situations: Physical Description\, New Data\, Tools\, and Reconstruction Method\nRaman Microspectroscopy and Advanced Statistics for Detection and Characterization of Gunshot Residue\nConsistent Single Shot Detection of Organic and Inorganic Residues from One Sample using LC/MS and Host-Guest Complexes\nA Method to Estimate the Age of Bloodstains using Quantitative PCR\nUse of Genetically Variant Peptides to Statistically Estimate the Genetic Background of Hair Shafts\nCellular Autofluorescence Signatures for Determination of Tissue Type\, Age of Evidence\, and Separating Contributors from Biological Mixtures\nUltrahigh Speed Direct PCR. A Method for Obtaining STR Based Genotypes in Under 6 Minutes\nChemical Analysis of Controlled Substances Using Automated Headspace Solid Phase Microextraction – Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry\nDetection and Quantification of Synthetic Opioids in Oral Fluid\nComparison of Two Validated LCMSMS Methods for the Quantitative Analysis of Opioids\, Cocaine\, and Cocaine Metabolites in Biological Matrices\nDevelopment of a Quantifiable Confirmatory Test to Detect Fly Artifacts Contaminating Bloodstain Evidence\nICPUTRD: Image Cloud Platform for Use in Tagging and Research on Decomposition\n\nPlease visit the FTCoE’s website for more information on this event. \n

SUMMARY:Emergency Triage\, Treat and Transport (ET3) Model Webinar
DESCRIPTION:A webinar will be hosted by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation’s (Innovation Center) Emergency Triage\, Treat\, and Transport (ET3) Model team on 27 Feb 2019. \nET3 is a voluntary\, five-year payment model that will provide greater flexibility to ambulance care teams to address emergency health care needs of Medicare beneficiaries following a 911 call. Under the ET3 model\, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will pay participating ambulance suppliers and providers: \n\nTransport an individual to a hospital emergency department (ED) or other destination covered under the regulations\nTransport to an alternative destination (such as a primary care doctor’s office or an urgent care clinic)\nProvide treatment in place with a qualified health care practitioner\, either on the scene or connected using telehealth\n\nAs a result\, the ET3 model aims to improve quality and lower costs by reducing avoidable transports to the ED and unnecessary hospitalizations following those transports. \nCurrently\, Medicare regulations only allow payment for emergency ground ambulance services when individuals are transported to hospitals\, critical access hospitals\, skilled nursing facilities\, and dialysis centers. Most beneficiaries who call 911 with a medical emergency are therefore transported to one of these facilities\, and most often to a hospital ED\, even when a lower-acuity destination may more appropriately meet an individual’s needs. \nThe webinar will include a timeline for release of the Request for Applications and the Notice of Funding Opportunity. \nEMS providers\, beneficiaries and other interested parties are invited to attend the webinar. SUMMARY:NIST Risk Management Framework Webcast: A Flexible Methodology to Manage Information Security and Privacy Risk
DESCRIPTION:The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will host a Risk Management Framework Webcast: A Flexible Methodology to Manage Information Security and Privacy Risk on 28 Feb 2019. \nThis webcast will provide a 2-hour overview and deep dive of the recently released NIST Special Publication (SP) 800-37\, Revision 2 \, Risk Management Framework for Information Systems and Organizations: A System Life Cycle Approach for Security and Privacy. This update to NIST SP 800-37 develops the next-generation Risk Management Framework (RMF) for systems\, organizations\, and individuals by: \nRegistration is not required to view the webcast\, but registered viewers will receive a reminder and updates prior to the webcast. \nProviding a closer link and communication between the risk management processes and activities at the C-suite and the individuals\, processes\, and activities at the system and operational level of the organization through the addition of the Prepare Step; \nInstitutionalizing foundational risk management preparatory activities at all risk management levels; \nDemonstrating how the  NIST Cybersecurity Framework  can be aligned with the RMF and implemented using established NIST risk management processes; \nIntegrating privacy risk management processes into the RMF to better support the privacy protection needs for which privacy programs are responsible; \nPromoting the development of trustworthy secure software and systems by aligning life cycle-based systems engineering processes in  NIST SP 800-160 Volume 1 ; \nIntegrating security-related\, supply chain risk management (SCRM) concepts into the RMF to address untrustworthy suppliers\, insertion of counterfeits\, tampering\, unauthorized production\, theft\, insertion of malicious code\, and poor manufacturing and development practices throughout the SDLC; and \nAllowing for an organization-generated control selection approach to complement the traditional baseline control selection approach and support the use of the consolidated security and privacy control catalog in  NIST SP 800-53 Revision 5 . \nThis webcast will feature an introduction by Dr. Ron Ross\, NIST Fellow\, an overview of the updates in SP 800-37\, Revision 2\, followed by a deep dive into the Steps and Tasks of the RMF by Kelley Dempsey\, Vicky Pillitteri and Naomi Lefkovitz. \nAt the conclusion of the event\, speakers will address questions sent to  sec-cert@nist.gov  or Twitter using the hashtag #NISTRMF. \nThe webcast will be recorded and available on this website within 2 weeks following the event; slides will be available on this website prior to the webcast. \nAttendees are always welcome to self-report to their authoritative certification bodies to request CEUs for attending this event.
